The Contribution of Selecting and Evaluating Textbooks to Language Teaching and Learning in EFL Classroom

Abstract

Bu makale, yabancı dil öğretimi ve öğrenimi sürecinde, ders materyallerinin seçimi ve değerlendirmesinin önemini vurgulamaktadır. Bu kapsamda, Dokuz Eylül Üniversitesi, İngilizce Bölümünde öğrenim gören öğretmen adaylarının böyle bir dersten ne şekilde yararlanabilecekleri tartışılacaktır. Bunun yanı sıra, makale ayrıca, ders kitaplarının seçimi ve değerlendirilmesine dayanak teşkil edecek olan temel kriterleri sunmayı ve böyle bir teorik uygulamayı, öğretmen adaylarının aktif bir şekilde yer alacağı öğrenme ve öğretme süreciyle birlikte ele almayı amaçlamaktadır. Öğrencilerin dördüncü sınıfın ilk döneminde aldıkları ‘materyal değerlendirme’ dersi ile ilgili bireysel görüşlerinin değerlendirilmesi ile elde edilen veriler, çalışmada önemli bir yer tutmaktadır. Aynı şekilde, öğrencilerin kendilerine yöneltilen sorulara verdiği cevapların, ‘materyal değerlendirme’ dersine yönelik genel eğilimleri hakkında önemli bulgular sağlaması beklenmektedir.This paper stresses the importance of selecting and evaluating textbooks in the process of language teaching and learning. To this end, the implications for this process are employed to address the issue of how the teacher trainees in the English department at Dokuz Eylül University are likely to benefit from such a methodological course. Moreover, it aims to illustrate the criteria for selecting and evaluating textbooks while seeking to build such a theoretical framework onto the learning and teaching process in which the teacher trainees are, in practical terms, actively indulged. This paper also relies on the empirical data obtained from students‘ perceptions of the course in question which they took in the first semester of the fourth year. Students‘ answers to the relevant questions are intended to bring about data on students‘ common tendency toward this course.
