Abstract
AN INVESTIGATION ON THE PHYTOPLANKTON AND ITS SEASONAL VARIATION OF DERBENT RESERVOIR (BAFRA, SAMSUN-TURKEY) ABSTRACT Derbent Reservoir's phytopiankton, seasonal variation, physical and chemical factors which affected these variation and amount of chlorophyil-a were determined between February 2001 - July 2002. Total 194 taxa belonging to Bacillariophyta, Chlorophyta, Chrysophyta, Cryptophyta, Cyanophyta, Dinophyta, Euglenophyta, and Xanthophyta were found in the phytopiankton. Although physical factors such as light and temperature have limiting effect, chemical properties and the level of mineral nutrients have not limiting effect on the growth of phytopiankton. The values belonging to chemical parameters were found to be in between normal limite. The amount of chlorophyli-a showed usually simitar values to the density of the phytopiankton. Cyclotella species from Bacillariophyta were caused blooms in spring and autumn and Synedra species in winter and spring seasons. Chlorococcales members belonging to Chlorophyta were dominant organisms in the early spring, summer and autumn. Dinobryon sertularia from Chrysophyta made blooms in especially summer and autumn. Whereas, the other groups did not reach significant numbers. The composition of phytopiankton in the surface and depth did not change. However the amount of phytopiankton decreased toward the depth. The results of cluster analysis were supported the values determined from counting. Although the morphometric structure of the Derbent Reservoir was oligotrophic character, it was concluded to be at mesotrophic level due to its physical and chemical properties of water, a phytopiankton type which caused water blooming by various taxa during certain months and in the light of literatures. Key words: Derbent Reservoir, phytopiankton, seasonal variation, water quality, cluster analysis
