Abstract

V ABSTRACT In this work, as a model for living cell membrane, lamellar phase, disc phase and cholesteric phases of lytropic liquid crystal system composed of 'decyl amonium chloride (DACl)-amonium chloride (NH.Cl-cholesterol (kol) -water (H20) ' was prepared. The photographs of the prepared phases were taken by the Olymmis polarizing microscope at the 19 Mayıs University. The percentages of each component in the phases obtained by comparing the photographs with those in the literature are given below: a) The composition of the lamellar phase b) The composition of the disc phase DAC1 42. 6S % NH4C1 t.72 % Choi. o..<)L % H20 53. 6J % c) The composition of the induced cholesteric phaseVI +2 +2 Then, Cu and Mn ions were added separately into each crystal phase and their E.S.R. spectra were recorded with x-band Varian E - line: Century Series E.S.R. spectrometer. +2 Furthermore, E.S.R. spectra were taken for Cu ions in +2 'ethanol - water' mixture and Mn ions in ethanol. +2 +2 From the obtained spectra, for Mn and Cu ions in each of the liquid crystal phase, spectroscopic splitting factor g and hyperf ine structure contants were determined both in isotropic and anisotropic media. +2 In the case of Cu ions, it was observed that g '.' factors have large anisotropies and resonance transmition intensities are orientation dependent. +2 On the other hand, for Mn ions hyper fine structure constant was fojnd to be i'sotronic and g-factors were relatively small anisotropic. The results obtained were compared with the results available in the literature (Weast, 1980; Assenheim, 1966) were found to be in good agreement.
