Publication: Roma İmparatorluğu'nda Lanetlenen İmparatorlar
Abstract
Cursing was a method frequently used in ancient societies, and in the Roman Empire it was a type of memory politics used to curse and discredit memories, generally known as Domnatio Memoriae. This method was certainly not applied to people who were beneficial to society. Domnatio Memoriae was generally carried out against individuals who aroused feelings of hatred in society and left a negative mark on their era. These individuals were known to be the cause of widespread atrocities such as the arbitrary killing of people, systematic torture, and oppression. In accordance with the application, a propaganda of destruction was pursued by damaging the portraits, statues, coins, and all kinds of monumental structures left behind by the person. Similar examples of this practice in the ancient world can also be found in Egypt and Assyria. The study, based on the Roman emperors Caligula, Nero, Galba, Vitellius, Domitianus, Commodus, and Heliogabalus, will recount the lives of these emperors.
