Abstract
ii In this work, coordination compounds formed in methacrylic acid(maaH)-Cu,methacrylic acid-pyridine(py)-Cu and methacrylic acid-vinylpyridine(vpy)-Cu systemswere characterized by using IR, UV-VIS, DTA-TG and Single Crystals X-RayDiffraction and Gouy balance. In methacrylic acid-Cu and methacrylic acid-vinylpyridine-Cu systems [Cu2(µ-maa)4(maaH)2] and [Cu2(µ-maa)4(vpy)2] formed, respectively. But in metacrylic acid-pyridine-Cu systems, two complexes formed,[Cu(maa)2(py)2H2O] and [Cu2(µ-maa)4(py)2].The frequency changes in COO- vibrations of the methacrylate ligands wereused to explain their coordination behavior. The characteristic IR vibrations peaks forvinyl and carboxyl group were found to be in agreement with the literature.Spin-only magnetic moments of the complexes were calculated by measuringtheir magnetic susceptibility at room temperature. All complexes were found to beparamagnetic but magnetic moments of the dimeric compounds were lower because ofantiferromagnetic interaction.Thermal decomposition behavior of complexes was investigated by TG andDTA techniques. They lose their neutral ligants in the first stage of decomposition andin final stage copper metacrylate decomposes to copper oxide. The structures of the synthesized compounds were determined by single crystalX-ray diffraction method. In all structures the geometry around the Cu(II) is distortedsquare pyramidal.Key Words: Methacrylate Complexes, Methacrylic Acid, Pyridine, 4-Vinylpyridine, X-Ray Single Crystal, Cu(II)
